Brouwerij Cavé – Paapje Tripel – Beer review

A powerful tripel with a fresh taste and a citrusy character. These are the characteristics from the beer: ‘Paapje Tripel’ from brewery Cavé.

Brewery Cavé is a local brewery from Voorschoten and they brew beautiful craft beers. The Paapje Tripel is named after ‘de Papenlaan’ and ‘de Papewegse Polder’ which are located in Voorschoten. This beer is easy to drink due to its smooth taste and it has a slightly bitter aftertaste. You definitely taste the flavour of hop in this beer and because it has has citrusy character, it also tasted quite spicy.

We absolutely loved it! Therefore we rate this beer a 4/5.

Alsur Café El Born – Review

In the El Born district of Barcelona lays Alsur Café El Born. This café is a mix of a bar, lounge and a terrace. So no matter what your intentions are, they always have a seat for you! That is why their slogan is: “Whatever you want, Whenever.”

We found this place online after their pictures grabbed our attention. Since we were in the neighbourhood, we decided to give it a try and we went out for lunch. We sat down in a cosy corner where we had a good overview of the place, well.. one of the places. The café is huge! But what surprised us the most was the menu because they have an unique selection of dishes and snacks.

We saw for example a waffle with grilled-cheese and one with chicken. We hadn’t heard of this combination before and therefore we decided to give it a try.
The dishes had a very unique and delicious flavour which we still can’t understand. We absolutely loved it!
Since we love beers, we had no choice but to order a local craft beer.
We choose the La Niña Barbuda (brown ale). The beer tasted amazing as well and we were happily surprised by it.

Alsur Café El Born is an outstanding place with a lot of options on their menu. If you are in El Born, you should definitely swing by this Café. Even if it is only for a drink. It is definitely worth it!

Interview – Brouwerij Breugem

We have partnered up with Brouwerij Breugem since august 2019 and we have reviewed almost all of their beers. But who are the people behind Breugem? First of all, we have Patrick Breugem. He is the founder and owner of the brewery. Together with Ernst (shareholder) and Marcel (Beer connoisseur/accountmanager) they create all different sorts of amazing beers.

During the pandemic, sales declined eventhough retail and liquor stores stayed open. The deliveries to restaurants and cafés stopped, so Breugem and his team had to use their creativity to overcome the decline in sales.
Breugem now offers a special beer box with beers from breugem. Also, you can buy special boxes with food and drinks from local partners. In this way, you can enjoy your beer with matching snacks.
They also changed the appearance of their flagship beer ‘Zoentje’ by selling it in a can instead of a bottle.
Moreover, the most important change is the new online webshop at brouwerijbreugem.nl.

Futheremore, the brewery sees, as a positive effect of COVID-19, a lot more people drinking beers at home and sharing their opinions via platforms like Untappd. They rate the beers and give an explanation why they gave their rating. Because of this, the bond between the brewery and the customer has been strengthened since they now have the opportunity to interact more with their customers then before.

Martin’s Brugge

Recently, we have posted a lot about all the restaurants we visited during our trip to Bruges earlier this year.
A few of you asked us where we stayed at during our visit. Therefore, we decided to dedicate a full review about the accommodation in Bruges.

We booked a Superior room at the hotel Martin’s Brugge for two nights. The hotel is located in the city centre and this allowed us to walk to every sight within a very short amount of time and distance.
The hotel consists of multiple connected buildings which makes it one large maze hallwaysystem.
Close to the end of the maze was our room. The room was absolutely beautiful with modern aesthetics. We slept very well on the soft bed and the next day we were ready to see what the breakfast buffet had to offer.
We were happily surprised by the large assortment of breads, cheeses, juices and the warm and cold food options. There was plenty to choose from if you ask us.

To summarize our stay, we loved our stay and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the room and breakfast. The staff is very friendly and they are happy to accommodate you with any information that you need about the city or the hotel. If you need a place to stay in Bruges, we absolutely recommend you to book your room at Martin’s Brugge for a wonderful stay.

Oedipus – Manneliefde

After our last post about ‘Trigo’ from brewery Founders Brewing Co. from the beerbox, we decided to review our next beer from this box. The beer is from the Dutch brewery Oedipus.The name of this beer is Mannenliefde and this is the very first brew of this brewery.
Mannenliefde is a brew to free beer from predominant ideas about beer as a masculine drink, it’s about openness and vulnerability and diversity.
The beer is a 6% ABV Saison and the brewery has added lemongrass to add freshness, Szechuan pepper to give it a bit of bite and Sorachi ace hops to give it some herbal and coconut aromas.
We liked this beer but it was not something very special. We rate this beer a 3.5/5

Hertog Jan Grand Prestige

This time we choose to review our most favourite beer from the Dutch brewery Hertog Jan; Grand Prestige.
This beer is brewed with up to four different malts and it can also be described as a barley wine. The beer contains the flavour of caramel and roasted malt and it has a beautiful bitter aftertaste. This beer is full and complex and it has a deep reddish colour. The alcohol percentage is 10%.

We received this beer from friends on the 8th of February 2019 and the beer itself is from 2018. The brewery states that this beer will even get a more balanced flavour after it has been kept for several years. Therefore we decided to keep it for another year to see what this does to the taste. We drank it on the 10th of April 2020 and the taste is quite similar to an old port wine. It tasted even more bitter and you could now really taste the roasted malt. We truly loved it!

We rate it a 4.5/5. Cheers!

Terra Promessa – Bruges

The whole weekend we were craving pizza but we never managed to order it somewhere. Luckily, we came across Terra Promessa during our weekend in Bruges (Brugge). Terra Promessa is a small Italian restaurant close to the city centre of Bruges.

We ordered the “Pane all’aglio” which is garlic bread with cheese, a “Pizza piccante” (spicy pizza with chorizo, bell pepper and spicy chili sauce) and a “Pizza quatro formaggi” (four cheeses).
The ‘Pane all’aglio was a tasty starter and it was enough for the two of us.
When the pizzas arrived at our table both of us were salivating. The pizza looked so appetising and they were also quite large. Not only did it look good.. it tasted incredible as well! The waitresses at the restaurant were also very kind. The food was served very quickly to our table and we had a wonderful time here.

If you are ever in Bruges, don’t hesitate to call the restaurant to make a reservation. It is definitely worth it!

Brouwerij Breugem – Asian White

We have drank almost every beer from Brouwerij Breugem except this one.
The Asian White is a wheatricebeer with freshly grated Galanga root (a plant close to ginger) and Djeroek Poeroet (lime leaves).
This beer is a typical summer beer, since it has a low alcoholpercentage and because it has a very fresh and citrusy flavour.
This beer won silver in the category of “White Beer with extra ingredients, Beer with Spices”, Kraft Roku 2017.

Information about the beer:
Malt: Wheat, Pils, Sour and Rice flakes
Hops: Cascade
Various: Laos root en Djeroek Poeroet
Bitterness: 16 EBU which means that the beer has slightly bitter flavour (EBU= European Bitternes Units).
Alcohol percentage: 4,6%

We were surprised by the fresh and balanced flavour of this beer. We truly loved it and we would definitely like to drink this beer again in the future. This beer is absolutely recommended as a wonderful beer to drink on any occasion!

Velusso Cycling Café Bruges

The Zilverpand in the city centre of Brugge contains a very cool café named: “Velusso Cycling Café”.
Velusso is a English company who offers different cycling related activities in Europe. We did not know that it was a cycling cafe, until we started writing this review.
We noticed the café when we were strolling around in the city. We were searching for a cozy place to drink a cup of coffee and this place looked really appealing to us.

The interior is quite industrial and it is adapted to allow cyclists to fuel up. From changing rooms to a place to stall your bike, as a small store with some cycling equipment. This café has it all!
We sat down inside and ordered some coffee. The waitresses were very kind and they made beautiful latte art in our coffees. We talked a lot with each other and before we knew, we had spent hours inside Velusso.

If you are in the area, make sure you stop by and order a nice cup of coffee or something to eat.

Annie’s Leiden

When we announced that we were going to post a review about Annie’s we were overwhelmed with responses. All of them were very positive.

Annie’s is a unique restaurant located in the city centre of Leiden. If you have ever visited Leiden, you will know that the city has a lot of beautiful canals. Annie’s is located on one of them and it has a wonderfull terras and cozy inside seating areas. Everyone knows Annie’s and that’s for a reason. The quality of the food, service and the unique location make Annie’s a “must visit” in Leiden! You can’t say you have visited Leiden if you haven’t been to Annie’s.

We visited the restaurant in the afternoon to grab some lunch. We started off with a nice cappuccino and a cup of mint tea. As our main course we ordered a goat cheese sandwich and carpaccio. The goat cheese sandwich was incredibly good. This course contains 2 big slices of creamy goat cheese, honey, a brown bun and some veggies. After my girlfriend finished her course, she almost ordered another one . My carpaccio was also very good. It was quite a large portion with some brown bread and parmesan cheese. It was one of the best I’ve ever had! The service was also very good. The food was served on time and the staff were all very polite to us.

If you’re looking for an amazing spot in Leiden to eat, go to Annie’s! We can be very short about that
