We have partnered up with Brouwerij Breugem since august 2019 and we have reviewed almost all of their beers. But who are the people behind Breugem? First of all, we have Patrick Breugem. He is the founder and owner of the brewery. Together with Ernst (shareholder) and Marcel (Beer connoisseur/accountmanager) they create all different sorts of amazing beers.

During the pandemic, sales declined eventhough retail and liquor stores stayed open. The deliveries to restaurants and cafés stopped, so Breugem and his team had to use their creativity to overcome the decline in sales.
Breugem now offers a special beer box with beers from breugem. Also, you can buy special boxes with food and drinks from local partners. In this way, you can enjoy your beer with matching snacks.
They also changed the appearance of their flagship beer ‘Zoentje’ by selling it in a can instead of a bottle.
Moreover, the most important change is the new online webshop at brouwerijbreugem.nl.

Futheremore, the brewery sees, as a positive effect of COVID-19, a lot more people drinking beers at home and sharing their opinions via platforms like Untappd. They rate the beers and give an explanation why they gave their rating. Because of this, the bond between the brewery and the customer has been strengthened since they now have the opportunity to interact more with their customers then before.

It is also possible to follow this brewery on their Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn page and you can sign up to their monthly newsletter via their website! We will keep reviewing their beers so make sure you follow Breugem so you can stay up to date with the latest beer developments and special offers!

We love their work and we think you will too!

Brewery Lowlander is a very special Dutch brewery since they brew beer with botanicals. They brew with herbs, spices and fruits to create unique and naturally delicious beers. We decided to try the Islander Summer Ale which has a low alcoholpercentage of 3.8%. This beer is inspired by Curacao and it is brewed with the islands’ vitamin C rich orange and dragon fruit.
We were actually quite disappointed by the taste of this beer. It tasted quite watery and it wasn’t as fruity as we expected it to be. Therefore we rate this beer a 2.5/5.
What is your favourite Lowlander beer?

The session IPA is a beer with a strong personality but it has a soft side as well. This IPA is hopped with Citra and Galaxy for a fruity character and for excellent drinkability. While retaining its spicy character, this beer can be tasted just a little more often. The beer has a low alcoholic percentage of 4%. We drank this beer on a sunny day in our garden and we absolutely loved it! It is a very fresh flavoure and not very bitter. Therefore it is quite an easy beer to drink.
We rate this beer a 4/5.

We have drank almost every beer from Brouwerij Breugem except this one.
The Asian White is a wheatricebeer with freshly grated Galanga root (a plant close to ginger) and Djeroek Poeroet (lime leaves).
This beer is a typical summer beer, since it has a low alcoholpercentage and because it has a very fresh and citrusy flavour.
This beer won silver in the category of “White Beer with extra ingredients, Beer with Spices”, Kraft Roku 2017.

Information about the beer:
Malt: Wheat, Pils, Sour and Rice flakes
Hops: Cascade
Various: Laos root en Djeroek Poeroet
Bitterness: 16 EBU which means that the beer has slightly bitter flavour (EBU= European Bitternes Units).
Alcohol percentage: 4,6%

We were surprised by the fresh and balanced flavour of this beer. We truly loved it and we would definitely like to drink this beer again in the future. This beer is absolutely recommended as a wonderful beer to drink on any occasion!

  • Brewery de Halve Maan - Collection of pictures

Before we start this review, we would like to say to everyone: stay strong, help each other where possible and listen to the government and experts advice about the corona (COVID-19) pandemic.
In the meanwhile, we will keep on posting our weekly reviews. We would love to hear how you are doing so feel free to comment on our post or sent us a message.

The next review from our visit to Brugge is Brouwerij de Halve Maan (Brewery the Crescent Moon). Did you know that this brewery brews the (famous) “Brugse Zot” and “Straffe Hendriks”?
The brewery is located near the heart of Brugge and it excists since 1856. The brewery is still operational on its original location which is very special. To produce more beer, they even build (an crowed funded) a pipeline for the beer to transport the beer underneath Brugge to the botteling factory just outside the city.
We would have never knew all these facts without the XL- tour that the brewery offered!
The tour started at the, currently used, brewing kettles. Our guide told us about the process and how the beer flows through all four of the brewing kettles. She told us how to use each one and how it contributes to the final product, beer.
Our next stop was at the top of the building of the brewery. This might be one of the best views there is of Brugge. You could see the whole city and all it’s assets.
Our tour ended at the bar in the basement. Since we did the XL tour, we got an unfiltered Brugse Zot, a Brugse dubble and we had the choice of a Straffe Hendriks triple or quadruple. We never drank a Straffe Hendriks and it was amazing to finally drink a quadruple beer!
The tour was fantastic and very informative and the guide did a fantastic job at explaining everything about the brewery and answering all the questions from our group. We loved it!
If you are planning to travel to Brugge, you definitely shouldn’t skip a tour at the Brouwerij de Halve Maan!

  • The interiour of Sint Joris - Brugge

On our first evening in Brugge we went for dinner on the “Markt” (large/main square). After looking at different menu’s at the restaurants, we decided to go to Sint Joris. ❤
The kind gentleman at the door seated us at a table near the window. We overlooked the whole square at this fantastic table.

Since we were in Brugge, we couldn’t settle for anything less than a Brugse Zot which is a special beer from Brugge. As starters we ordered the cheese croquettes and a fish soup. The cheese croquettes were absolutely that best that we had in Brugge. They were way larger than we had imagined and it tasted incredible. The fish soup was very good as well. Even though I usually do not like soup that much.
For our main course we ordered the steak and salmon. Both came as quite a large portion, but they were very tasty and delicious. After we cleared our courses the we were about to explode. So much food… You would think we did not order a dessert after this big main course, but for all of you who know us, we of course did. We had a dame blanche and a waffle with sugar and whipped cream. It was so much that we rolled to our hotel, which was luckily for us, just around the corner.

Would we recommend Sint Joris? Well of course! If you compare this restaurant to the other restaurants on the square, this place looks more appealing and the price of the dishes are fair for what you get.

Have you visited Brugge and what was your highlight of your visit?

  • Breugem Seanse Tripel poured in a glass

This week we drank a very special beer from brewery Breugem which owes it’s name to a specific region in the Netherlands : “de Zaan”.
The Saense Tripel is full of aromas of herbs from the yeast and it has a fresh citrus-like character from a mixture of American and German hops.
It is an intense and complex Dutch tripel and it is a very easy beer to drink. This beer won the third prize of the tastiest Tripel at the Beer festival in Groningen in 2016.

Ingredients of the beer:
– Malt: Pils and CaraPils Hops: Hallertau Tradition, Lublin, Centennial and Citra.
– Other ingredients: Barley flakes and candy sugar
– Bitterness: 32 EBU, which means that it is a bitter beer.
– Alcohol percentage: 8.3%

We were pleasantly surprised by the taste of the beer. It tasted exceptionally good! This is definitely one of the best beers that we drank from this brewery! Therefore we would absolutely recommend this beer
