  • Salmon Baquette - In Den Ouden Vogelstruys - Maastricht

We visited Café In den Ouden Vogelstruys on our first day in Maastricht. This café is one of the oldest cafés in the Netherlands and iconic for Maastricht.
The café is situated at the famous Vrijthof and they have a beautiful terrace overlooking this square.

Since it was quite hot that day, we decided to take a seat in the shadow. We first ordered a Coca Cola and a homemade ice tea (which tasted delicious). Thereafter we ordered a baguette with salmon and a baquette with Dutch “kroketten”.
The baguette with salmon had quite a lot of salmon on it which tasted very appetizing. Moreover, the capers and nuts tasted amazing in combination with the salmon. ❤
The baquette with the Dutch kroketten was also very tasy. The croquettes were of good quality and the salad on the side also tasted really nice.

We definitely had enjoyable afternoon at this restaurant and the waiters were all very relaxed and kind. Since it was quite busy on the terrace, we had to wait sometimes for somebody to take our order. However, this was not a problem to us. If you’re in the area of the Vrijthof, then this is absolutely a great place to go for lunch.

  • Leffe Blond - Restaurant Z!N - Valkenburg

On the last two days of our citytrip, we stayed in Valkenburg which is a city close to Maastricht. After a busy morning of exploring the caves of this city, we decided to go for lunch at Restaurant Z!N. Since it was very hot that day, we took a seat in the shade on their terrace.

We ordered two cold Leffe Blond beers and a sandwich with brie and a sandwich with an omelet. The Leffe Blond beers were brought to our table very quick and from our table we had a good overview of the whole restaurant. The Leffe Blond beers tasted amazing as usual, it is always one of our favourites.
Unfortunately, we had to wait for quite some time for our sandwiches to arrive. It took approximately one hour and since we had booked an excursion later that day, we were in a little bit of a hurry. Luckily, when the sandwiches arrived they tasted good!
The one with the omelet was a well-filled sandwhich and it tasted delicious. We honestly expected a little bit more from the sandwhich with brie since there wasn’t that much brie on it.

We had a great lunch at this Restaurant Z!N but we had expected a little bit more of them. The food was okay but not fantastic and we had to eat our lunch in a hurry since we had to wait for a long time. It is absolutely a beautiful restaurant to have lunch but we were not completely satisfied. Therefore, we wouldn’t recommend this restaurant unfortunately.

  • Ham and Cheese toast - Restaurant In Den Hiemel

We past by Café D’n Hiemel while visiting one of the sights of Maastricht. We were looking for something simple to eat and the options on their menu looked very appealing to us. This café is located near the ‘Helpoort’ and the ‘Stadspark’ and they have a very cozy terrace. ❤

We took a seat at one of the tables on their terrace where we had a good view of the Helpoort. We had to order through a QR-code and we first ordered a large ice tea and a beer. Thereafter we ordered a grilled ham and cheese sandwich (a tosti ham kaas in Dutch). It was nothing special but it tasted really good. The only con was that we received plastic cutlery which made it sometimes quite difficult eat properly.

We also ordered some bread with dip and surprisingly it came with tortilla chips as well. We thought that this was quite an unique combination since there was no dip for the tortilla chips at all. We also didn’t received a knife to spread the dip on our bread. Therefore we decided to re-use the knife that we used for our grilled ham and cheese sandwich. The dish tasted okay but it was quite a weird combination.

Overall, we had a good experience at this café. The meals are really cheap and the waiters were all very friendly. We had a great lunch here but, it would have been nice if we had gotten real cutlery. However, if you are looking for a simple, budget lunch than this is definitely the place to be!

  • Salmon tartare - Gastrobar JEF

On our last evening in Maastricht we visited JEF Gastrobar. JEF Gastrobar is a beautiful restaurant in the Rechtstraat with a modern and luxurious interior. They serve amazing food and incredible wines and the atmosphere in the restaurant is relaxed and cozy.

We started our evening with a bottle of Verdejo and some bread with olive oil to start with. The waitresses were very professional and they were very keen on empty glasses and plates. Moreover, they were happy to tell us more information about the wine and food that we received.

As a starter, we ordered the salmon tartare and the crispy deep fried goat cheese.
The crispy fried goat cheese tasted amazing together with the honey dip. It was nothing special but it was just very tasteful. Furthermore, we were at first a bit surprised by the flavour of the salmon tartare since it had a very fresh and citrusy taste. But after we got justed to it, it tasted delicious!
For the main course we ordered the risotto and cod. The amount of risotto was a little bit to much for us, but it still tasted delicious together with the truffel, spinach and the pine nuts. The cod tasted very appetizing and the noodles and veggies were excellent as well. As our final course, we ordered two JEF’s Scroppino’s (with Piña Colada) which tasted very creamy and refreshing.

We had an wonderful evening at this restaurant and the food tasted amazing. Therefore, we would absolutely like to recommend this restaurant to anyone who would like to eat a little bit more luxurious in the city center of Maastricht. You will definitely get an amazing experience and service at this restaurant.

  • Mojito and Espresso Martini - Mr. Smith Speakeasy - Maastricht

Hidden in the Rechtstraat in Maastricht you will find speakeasy cocktailbar Mr. Smith.
We visited this bar on a Friday evening after we reserved a table online a couple of days beforehand.

When you arrive at the bar, you first have to ring a doorbell and then a host comes to pick you up and bring you downstairs.
The bar is not very big but is has a very cozy and luxurious atmosphere. The waitress in the bar was also very kind and we received almost all of our drink within a decent amount of time.
We first ordered a Espresso Martini and a Mojito. Both were beautifully prepared and they tasted amazing as well.

We also received some salt popcorn and chips on the side to enjoy which was very nice. Next we ordered a Whiskey Sour and a Licor 43 Sour. Again, both of the drinks tasted incredible and they were beautifully decorated. As a last drink we decided to go for the Daiquiri. This drink actually was the least flavourful from all the cocktails we had drank at this bar since it tasted a bit too strong for us.

We had an amazing night at this bar and therefore we would like this recommend this bar to anyone who is in for some incredible cocktails in Maastricht.

  • Bedroom - Townhouse Designhotel - Maastricht

While visiting Maastricht, we stayed in the Townhouse Designhotel for 3 nights. Townhouse is a beautiful and cozy hotel in the neighbourhood Wyck and it is within a short walking distance of the citycentre.
Authentic hospitality and ‘Limburgse gezelligheid’ are the key words of this hotel, but then in a modern way.

When we arrived at this hotel we directly felt at home. At check-in we received a cup of homemade soup and the staff were very kind and happy to tell you everything that you need to know about Maastricht.
The hotel is furnished in a modern/vintage style to make it feel like a cosy home. An perfect example is the lounge. The lounge has comfortable seatings, a fireplace and books and games within reach.

We booked the extra large room for the ultimate comfort and we must say that the room was incredibly gorgeous!
Especially the bathtub was so nice that we used it almost every day! Furthermore, the room included a huge king-size bed which slept absolutely wonderful. We also loved the the wall in our room which was covered with cute notes about the hotel and Maastricht.

Moreover, we booked our stay with breakfast included as well. Due to the pandemic, the hotel had a form where you could choose from 3 different breakfast menu’s instead of a buffet. If you want anything extra besides the menu you could just check a box and they will bring it together with the menu. This system worked very well and gave us a very safe and pleasant feeling.

Although we have not made any plans yet to revisit Maastricht, we would definitly book Townhouse again. Everything was amazing, clean and well organized.
From check-in to check-out, we had an outstanding experience!

We would like to know what hotel gave you the best experience? We might visit it in the future 😉

De Royale Martinus is another beer from brewery Stadsbrouwerij de Maastrichter Maltezer and its name refers to the St.Martinus church in Maastricht. St.Martin was the patron saint of the poor and soldiers.

De Royale Martinus is a hoppy blond beer with an alcoholpercentage of 5,4%. It is quite a sweet beer with a fresh and bitter aftertaste. Furthermore, the flavours of citrus and yellow exotic fruit are well presented in this beer. We already drank this beer during our tour through the brewery in July and since we really liked this beer, we decided to take one bottle home.
We were again happily surprised by the taste of this beer since we really loved the citrusy and bitter flavour.
However, we have to mention that, after drinking ‘De Maltezer’ before this one, this one was a bit disappointing to us. We preferred the taste of De Maltezer over this one but is it is still a good beer to drink.
Therefore we rate this beer a 3,5/5.

On our second day in Maastricht we decided to go to beer cafe ‘De Gouverneur’. This cafe serves over 300 (!) different kinds of beers and it is the first Belgium eat- and specialty beer cafe in Maastricht.
Since we really love to drink different beers, this was definitely the place to be.

When we arrived at the cafe it was extremely busy. Luckily, we already reserved a table in advance and therefore we got a very cozy table on the terrace. ❤

We first ordered a ‘Limburgse Witte‘ and a ‘Delirium Tremens‘. These beers were fruity and easy to drink and therefore perfect as our first beer. Furthermore, we ordered a Irish Burger and burger ‘De Gouveneur’. Both of the burgers were quite big and very tasty. Also, the Belgium fries on the side were very appetizing. As a dessert we decided to order a couple more beers. We started of with ‘Heinrich’ from brewery ‘In de Nacht‘. Thereafter we ordered the ‘Stoute Gijt‘ which is a Russian Imperial Stout. The beers tasted amazing and especially the ‘Stoute Gijt’ had an incredible flavour.
Finally, we ordered our last beer which was the ‘Rochefort 10’. This beer was quite strong but it had a delicious taste!

We had an wonderful evening at this cafe and when we are back in Maastricht we will definitely visit De Gouverneur again. It is absolutely a ‘must visit’ if you are in Maastricht. Absolutely recommended!

De Maltezer is the flagship beer of the brewery and it has an alcoholpercentage of 6,5%. It is a Dortmunder style, amber-coloured beer with a slightly fruity taste.
We definitely liked the malt-sweet character of this beer and we could also taste some tones of caramel. It also has a slightly bitter aftertaste which makes it a easy beer to drink. The beer absolutely has an unique flavour which we hadn’t experienced before since it tasted quite sweet.
We would certainly buy this beer again and therefore we rate this beer a 4,5/5.

  • Restaurant Al Mercato - Maastricht

A couple of weeks ago, we visited Maastricht for a small holiday in our own country.
On our first day, we were actually the whole day craving for pizza. Therefore we decided to visit restaurant Al Mercato.

The restaurant is located on the ‘Markt’ which is a beautiful square in Maastricht. We decided to take a seat at their terrace and we first ordered a Peroni beer and a glass of white wine. The waiters were all very hospitable and enthusiastic and there was a cozy atmosphere. We direclty felt at home at this restaurant.
Thereafter we ordered the Bruschetta al Pomodoro as a starter and the pizza Quattro Formaggi as a main. The bruschetta tasted amazing and it was beautifully prepared as well. The pizza Quattro Formaggi also tasted wonderful. Especially the dough was very good and also the blue veined cheese was well presented in this pizza.

We had a wonderful evening at this restaurant and we were happily surprised by the amazing service that we received. Therefore, we definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone who is in- or going to Maastricht. You will receive wonderful Italian food for a good price.
